Reference Managers: Mendeley

Mendeley is a reference manager integrated with databases and library catalogs that allows:

  • Import documents to a personal library, organize them into folders and add tags
  • Share documents, create and follow public and private groups, and review scientific articles collaboratively
  • Include citations in text documents and generate bibliographies in different styles (ISO, Harvard, Chicago, IEEE ...)
  • Create a personal profile with the curriculum, publications, affiliation, etc.

All members of the UPC have access to the Mendeley Institutional Edition (MIE).

  1. In the web interface of Mendeley Choose the Create account option
  2. Indicate your user information: you can use any email address (UPC or not).
  3. Once you have created your profile and without leaving Mendeley, click on the button eBIB of your browser and authenticate with the username and password of the intranets UPC. This will allow you to enjoy them advantages of the Mendeley Institutional Edition (MIE) as a member of the UPC.

To check if you already have it:

  1. In the web interface of Mendeley choose the Settings & privacy option from the top menu, next to the profile and photo.
  2. Choose Subscription option.
  3. In the Packages tab, Mendeley Institutional Edition must appear

Since Mendeley, click the button eBIB and authenticate with the username and password of the intranets UPC. You will enjoy more benefits than if you use the free version:

  • Personal library of up to 100 GB
  • Storage for research groups up to 100 GB
  • Unlimited private groups of up to 100 people each
  • Recommendations of articles from your personal library with Mendeley suggest
  • From Papers, link to the full text via UPC (Find this paper at)

To keep the benefits of your Mendeley Institutional Edition (MIE) account active, you need to renew your subscription at least once a year. You will receive an email from Mendeley a few weeks before it expires; just follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your account Mendeley through the Web
  2. Click the button eBIB of your browser and authenticate with the username and password of the intranets UPC
  3. Your account has already been renewed; to check it follow the instructions of How do I know if I have the Mendeley Institutional Edition (MIE)?

To create and organize your collection of references and documents:

1.- Download Mendeley Desktop or Mendeley Reference Manager from the section Downloads by Mendeley web. This will allow you to, among other things:

  • Drag PDF files to immediately enter the bibliography

  • Highlight and add notes to documents while you read them

  • share them privately with colleagues

Remember to always synchronize the database before logging out
This synchronizes the content (references, PDFs and annotations) of Mendeley Desktop or Reference Manager with your library on Mendeley web

2.- From the Mendeley Desktop or Mendeley Reference Manager, go to the Tools menu and download:

  • Web importer: browser plugin that allows you to import references and documents automatically from databases and / or web pages.
  • Plugin for Word or Libre Office (the latter only on Mendeley Desktop): allows you to add citations within the text and create bibliographies to your documents.

Before installing any Mendeley interface or plugin check in this page its compatibility with the operating system, browser, and word processor you use.


Check if a database allows you to export to Mendeley.

If you can not import citations with the Web importer, download them to a RIS (Bibliographic Software) or BibTeX file. Drag it to Mendeley Desktop to complete the process.

To generate the references in Catalan and Spanish according to the ISO 690:

  1. Download and install the corresponding format for the sorting system used in the bibliography ("name and date" or numerical) in the Mendeley Desktop.
  2. To install, copy and activate the following addresses to a new browser page (preferably not Google Chrome, which does not download the file):

System name and date Catalan: mendeley: // csl: //

Catalan numerical system: mendeley: // csl: //

Name and Spanish name system: mendeley: // csl: //

Numerical Spanish system: mendeley: // csl: //


To work with LaTeX:  

  1. Enter Mendeley Desktop and select Tools> Options> BibTeX.
  2. A BibTeX file will be created on your PC with your reference collection.
  3. This file will be updated whenever you make changes to Mendeley Desktop.

If you already haveORCID, you can automatically include posts that have DOI in your Mendeley account by activating the Works> Link Works icon.

They can also be included with a BibTeX (.bib) file by clicking Works> BibTeX Link.

To extract the BibTeX file from Mendeley:  

  1. Enter Mendeley Desktop
  2. In the My publications folder, select all references
  3. Click on the right button and choose the Export option
  4. Save the file in BibTex format (* .bib)
  5. Enter ORCID
  6. Choose Add Works and the Import BibTex option
  7. Load the file from the Choose file button

If you have your data and publications in ORCID and you want to export them to your Mendeley profile:

  1. Enter Mendeley
  2. Within your profile, select Create or Connect your ORCID ID.

You can add quotes to a text you are editing in Atenea.

  1. In Mendeley Desktop, open View Citation Style and choose the bibliographic format.
  2. Select the references you want to quote and drag them to the text you are writing to Atenea.

Private groups:

  • from Mendeley Reference Manager is where you can completely manage private groups: name, folders, members, etc. Right-click on the group name and select "Manage Group" or Rename, Delete or New Collection if you want to rename, create folders, etc.
  • from Mendeley Desktop you can view the content and right-click on the group name you can rename, create subgroups / folders or delete but you cannot manage members or permissions.

Institutional group: 

  • If you belong to an institutional group such as the UPC, you can access from your profile at the top right of Mendeley Web where they have created a section called "Institutional Groups".



If you have a database in another manager (RefWorks, EndNote, Zotero ...) you can migrate to Mendeley. Check the help guide to migrate.

Other managers:

  • Zotero: is a free software program for managing bibliographic references 
  • EndNote Online: is the free web version of the desktop reference manager of Clarivate.

Appointment creators are simpler and more limited applications than referral managers; they are useful for one-time use as they do not offer as many options for collecting, managing, and exporting bibliographic information as managers. They are usually free, although they offer the ability to create a premium account with some advanced tools.

Some of the dating creators available on the internet are:

  • Bibcitation: The free version allows you to capture references and generate citations in up to 9000 different styles including ISO 690: 2010, IEEE, Harvard, MLA (8th ed.), Chicago (17th ed.), APA (7th ed.), etc. ). If you register, you can save 6 different bibliography lists. It supports Google Docs through a plugin for Google Chrome.
  • Scratched: the free version allows you to capture references and generate citations in different formats. In addition, if you register, you can save bibliographies of up to 20 documents for a week. Offers to create bibliographies in different languages ​​and styles (ISO 690: 2010, IEEE, Harvard, MLA (8th ed.), Chicago (17th ed.), APA (7th ed.))
  • Google Docs: is Google's free web word processor; includes an application in the Tools menu to create citations and bibliographies in the formats MLA (8th ed.), Chicago (17th ed.), APA (7th ed.)
  • Cite-this-for-me: The free version allows you to capture references and generate citations in different formats.
