Title: Creación de una herramienta para el control y la mejora de la gestión del departamento de mantenimiento de edificios del distrito de Horta-Guinardó en el Ayuntamiento de Barcelona Authors: Balduque Vega, Raúl Abstract: El presente proyecto pretende satisfacer la necesidad del Distrito de Horta-Guinardó, del Ayuntamiento de Barcelona, de mejorar la gestión del Departamento de Mantenimiento. Dicha necesidad consiste en el desarrollo e implantación de un nuevo sistema de gestión del mantenimiento correctivo y preventivo del parque inmobiliario del Distrito. Antes de la realización del proyecto, el Departamento de Mantenimiento dispone de un sistema de gestión que controla los dos grandes bloques del mantenimiento de cualquier Distrito, Sector o Área del Ayuntamiento. El primer bloque es el encargado de la vía pública y el segundo el de los edificios e instalaciones que conforman los equipamientos municipales. Este segundo grupo será en el que nos centraremos, aunque hay que decir que ambos bloques tienen un funcionamiento muy similar. Se analiza, por lo tanto, cada una de las fases que conforman el propio funcionamiento del Departamento de Mantenimiento, desde la recepción de una petición o detección de una patología hasta la solución del problema. El procedimiento actual es el siguiente: recepción de las peticiones o detección de una incidencia, estudio de dichas peticiones o patologías por parte de los SSTT, creación de órdenes de trabajo (herramienta de gestión de incidencias), realización de las tareas correspondientes, certificación económica mensual de las mismas y, si el coste de la tarea es demasiado elevado para ser asumido por la partida económica asignada al mantenimiento, solicitud de presupuesto y posterior creación de expediente de inversión. A través del estudio de estas fases, se detectan las problemáticas existentes y se proponen las premisas del nuevo aplicativo para la mejora del sistema de gestión. El desarrollo del programa informático en sí es cometido de los programadores del Ayuntamiento por lo que no se describe en este proyecto. La función de éstos es clave para el avance de este proyecto ya que es necesario un contacto continuo con ellos con el fin de comentar e integrar en el sistema cada una de las modificaciones requeridas y el posterior soporte del programa informático. Estas mejoras no afectan tan sólo al diseño del sistema informático, sino que también alteran la manera de proceder hasta el momento en la gestión de este tipo de mantenimiento. Se describe en el proyecto, previa introducción a la repartición del presupuesto anual del Ayuntamiento y el funcionamiento de los Servicios Técnicos del Distrito, en especial de su Departamento de Mantenimiento, el nuevo sistema informático propuesto para la gestión de Departamento de Mantenimiento del Distrito de Horta-Guinardó como resultado del análisis de las problemáticas existentes. Con este programa se pretende conseguir los siguientes objetivos: - Mejorar el control del parque de equipamientos: disponer de toda información necesaria para conseguir conocer con precisión cada uno de los centros que conforman el parque y la composición del mismo. - Mejorar la gestión y la visión global: llevar correctamente a cabo los planes de mantenimiento. - Optimizar el personal: el aplicativo existente no permite rentabilizar al máximo de sus posibilidades el personal asignado al mantenimiento de Horta-Guinardó, que en este caso está resultando insuficiente.

Despite significant improvements to the performance of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) in recent decades, the electrical characteristics of CIGS solar cells still have not been completely understood, especially the origins and the properties of metastabilities. This project focuses on the electrical characterization of CIGS based thin film devices with different Cu contents. Different characterization techniques have been used in this project. With varying Cu content, the structural properties, basic parameters, space charge distribution, temperature dependent properties, reverse bias- and white light illumination- induced metastable effects and breakdown behaviors have been investigated.

Title: Assessment of the Effect of Intermittent Renewable Power Production on Future Power Systems Authors: Tummon, Oisin Abstract: An investigation was carried out into the effect of stochastically intermittent power production, from technologies harnessing wind and solar power, on future power systems. A brief overview of current research in the field brings together the essential points for analysis. An investigation into the technologies that may allow future power systems to handle this technology has also been included in this study. The basis for the analysis was calculating the demand profile for flexible plants or net demand profile. This was accomplished by calculating projected future power production of wind and solar technologies and subtracting this from a projected gross demand profile. The analysis of a load duration curve, or a plot of load over the year sorted by magnitude, was undertaken. The investigation of the load duration curve for the years 2020, 2025 and 2035, for demand and net demand in Germany, highlighted the impact of intermittent production. This was also compared to other existing studies. The effect of a storage model on the net demand allowed for the development of some understanding of the future impact of this type of technology. A storage model of a generic technology that could act over periods of 6, 24 and 168 hours was developed. The uncertainties associated with the investigation were discussed and conclusions were made on the results. Recommendations were made for future work in this field.

Title: Thin Multifunctional Dielectric Layers for Surface Passivation and Masking Against Wet Chemistry and Dopant Diffusion Authors: Suresh, Priyamvadha Abstract: In order to achieve cost competitiveness for energy production, the solar PV technology is dynamically shifting towards thinner wafers. Due to this cost driven reduction of solar wafer thickness, there is more influence of surface recombination in limiting the overall solar cell efficiency. Therefore a high surface passivation quality, using low cost process techniques is crucial for the concept of high-efficiency silicon solar cells with low cost per Watt peak. A new generation of silicon solar cell type is the passivated emitter and rear solar cell (PERC). In this technology, the cell is passivated on both emitter and rear sides to reduce recombination at the surface. During large scale development of PERC solar cells, there are certain drawbacks confronting current PERC cell development. Therefore, industries sought after process optimization techniques for developing high efficiency PERC cells through effective use of materials and low cost production methods. Hence within the framework of this Master thesis, further investigation to reduce the total cost of PERC-type solar cells is carried out. The thesis work is dedicated to investigating an optimized PERC concept to enhance the method of solar cell production, by suggesting an alternative process flow for the manufacture of PERC cells. This can be achieved through a re-arrangement of inline process steps involved in the standard fabrication mechanism and also through the omission of the rear polishing step. After a thorough study of different passivation layers, it was evident that the stack of Al2O3 rear passivation layer with SiNx capping layer proves to be a very suitable option for the proposed new concept of PERC cells fabrication. At Fraunhofer ISE a Sputter and PECVD deposition process for Al2O3 and SiNx layers has been successfully established. Therefore, experiments are performed with the main focus of investigating the stability of these Al2O3/SiNx rear passivation stacks as a barrier against the texturing and diffusion process and also to investigate the quality of surface passivation after the high temperature diffusion process. After a detailed analysis of the results of the texturing and diffusion experiments, three potential Al2O3/SiNx stack solutions are proposed as rear passivation stacks for the new PERC concept, which are deposited using the MW PECVD, ICP PECVD and Sputter techniques. Also, an economic analysis of the proposed solutions is performed, to validate the implementation of the new PERC concept

Title: The integration and evaluation of an intelligent PV setup in a smart house environment Authors: Sridharan, Vignesh Abstract: With the implementation of self-consumption electricity tariff in Germany and the increasing prospects of it being implemented in many other countries, the number of PV installations on individual rooftops has increased. With the increase in such individual power plants on dwellings, there arises a need for robust energy measurement principles, which require more sophisticated metering infrastructure involving smart meters with bidirectional communication protocols. In order to make the best use of the existing grid infrastructure and to implement peak power shaving, there is an increasing effort to implement Demand Response functions in houses with intelligent household appliances like time flexible washing machines and water heaters etc. These inclusions have driven the conventional homes into the Smart category. One such smart house consisting of Solar PV panels, Bidirectional grid feed converter assembly, Lead acid batteries (storage), intelligent home appliances and smart meters integrated with a demand response management software was built at VITO (The Flemish Institute for technological research), Mol, Belgium, to carry out research on concepts like smart grids, energy storage and Multi agent system based demand response management. The current project’s goal is to integrate and evaluate the intelligent PV system with smart loads in the LabVIEW environment and analyse how the individual components of the smart house behave during a cluster test. The intelligent PV system, which is being evaluated, consists of a PV simulator block, 3 individual converters in an assembly, Lead Acid Batteries, a heater as a non-deferrable load and connections to the AC grid. Few logics to measure and evaluate the energy consumption are also pondered upon. The LabVIEW VIs were developed for heater control. The thyristor and USB voltage based calibration was made for controlling the heater. The intermediate transformer losses were measured and look up tables made in the LabVIEW platform for the power loss compensation. A net zero energy consumption logic for the smart house was put to test, which could be potentially useful, when there are multiple sources of power generation and storage. The cluster tests resulted in giving a better understanding of the system. Some deviations were noticed from the programmed states of operation of the Flexiva bidirectional converter assembly. The switching ON of the deferrable load based on the availability of power was studied from the experiments conducted under different levels of SOC of the batteries. An interface to use a kWh pulse meter to measure the power consumption was also developed in LabVIEW. The smart house setup can be made to couple with (?) CHP plants, heat pumps and intelligent storage options with better communication interfaces in future to improve the functionality and reliability of the smart house.

Title: A Unit Commitment Model with Demand Response and Wind Energy Integration: Development of an Energy System Planning tool Authors: Shivakumar, Abhishek Abstract: The output of renewable energy fluctuates significantly depending on weather conditions. In this work, unit commitment model is developed using the forward dynamic programming approach, to analyze the effect of integrating wind energy on the power generation system operation. The model obtains the time series for the operational state of generators that would maximize the profits of an electric power utility by taking into account both the forecast of output for the wind energy as well as the demand response of consumers. In this work, the case study of the island of Corvo in the Portuguese archipelago Azores is considered. This system consists of diesel generators with a plan to integrate wind energy into the system as well implement a Demand Response strategy to utilise the wind energy during hours of excess. The study suggests a power generation schedule for the existing power system on the island in order to lower the cost of operation. The viability of integrating wind energy was also confirmed and a generation schedule was produced. A demand response strategy was integrated into the model, using the water heating demand as a shiftable load. The water heater load-shifting was carried out using a real-time-pricing strategy to incentivize the utilization of electricity during hours of excess wind production. Several scenarios were studied and the impact of the demand response strategy was found to be significant. Finally, the effect of limiting the instantaneous wind penetration was studied. It was found that the total wind penetration is affected significantly by the restrictions on the instantaneous wind penetration only during days of high average wind speeds.

Lasers can be used for selective ablation of different layer of such solar cells for structuring. This work aimed at fabricating flexible polymer solar cells with all layer processed from solution as well as investigating the effect of laser for structuring different layer of the solar cells fabricated. To fabricate the solar cells, well-established photoactive blends from poly-(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) and [6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PC61BM) was used. The solar cells were comprised of solution processed silver as cathode and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) as anode while zinc oxide (ZnO) was used as electron transport layer. An infrared laser was used to structure different layers of the solar cells and assess the effect on the layers. For fabrication, different layers were processed by lab-scale solution-based techniques such as doctor-blading, horizontal dipping and spin coating. Processing parameters for fabricating each layer were optimized experimentally and the solar cell fabricated with optimal parameters showed reasonable power conversion efficiency. Also, the analysis of structuring different layer of solar cells using an infrared laser is presented.

Title: Thermocline storage systems for concentrated solar power plants: One-dimensional mathematical model and numerical analysis Authors: Modi, Anish Abstract: well as governments all over the world in recent years. An important part of these plants, albeit a relatively lesser developed at the same time, is the storage system. The storage system helps in resolving two important operational issues: 1) intermittent nature of the energy source; and 2) reliability of plant operation. A good storage system is capable of improving the plant performance, and thus the economics of operation, by a significant margin. The current study aims to analyse one type of storage structure that is gaining popularity due to the promise of cost benefits involved: the single-tank thermocline storage system. The system is assumed to be a combination of porous filler bed and a fluid moving through the bed during charge and discharge cycles. A one-dimensional transient mathematical model is presented along with analysis of some important system parameters like the type of heat transfer fluid, the operating temperature difference, energy loss from the tank wall, bed porosity and tank diameter. During the analysis, it was observed that two important aspects for assessing the system performance are the cyclic behaviour of the system and the time required to attain this behaviour. This is directly influenced by the discharge capacity and discharge power, and therefore plays an essential role during system sizing. The temperature profiles and cycle cut-off criteria are other relevant parameters in assessing the system behaviour for different cases. It was also observed that Solar Salt performs the best among compared alternatives for heat transfer fluids with the mentioned assumptions; and that the system performance, with respect to storage capacity and discharge efficiency, depends highly on the combination of fluid and filler bed and their respective thermophysical properties. With appropriate system design, taking into consideration the abovementioned aspects, substantial performance improvements and economic benefits can be achieved through minimization of the losses that occur due to internal mixing and the losses to surroundings. The presented model can be further developed by including an analysis of idle state of the tank and more accurate data for mass flow rate, cut-off criteria and ambient conditions.

The neighbors fought for decades to realize the meter of Carmel. We can therefore say that there has been a before and after the tunnel occurred due to underground works in January 2005. Those painful events to residents and businesses in the neighborhood, which now can be assessed more dispassionate, have performed many transformations in everyday life in the neighborhood, but surely in the minds of people and offered the opportunity to reflect the complexity policy decisions and techniques. In this context, it must evaluate the act of justice which is the government effort that took place as a result of the events of Carmel in the field of care for people, public space, housing and equipment, and which began from the moment that the collapse occurred. You could say that the urban improvement program agreed for Carmel is proportional to the effort of the citizens of the neighborhood over the years.; [CASTELLÀ] En este trabajo haré una búsqueda de un corto pero intenso periodo de tiempo, entre 2005-2012, en el que el barrio ha vivido de manera acelerada procesos de cambio. Los vecinos lucharon durante muchas décadas para hacer realidad el metro del Carmel. Podemos decir, por tanto, que ha habido, un antes y un después del socavón producido a causa de las obras del metro en el mes de enero de 2005. Aquellos hechos dolorosos, para vecinos y comerciantes del barrio, que ahora ya se pueden valorar de manera más desapasionada, han comportado muchas transformaciones en la vida cotidiana del barrio, pero seguramente en la mentalidad de las personas y han ofrecido la oportunidad de reflexionar la complejidad de las decisiones políticas y técnicas. En este contexto, parece obligado valorar el acto de justicia que supone el esfuerzo que las administraciones públicas llevaron a cabo, a consecuencia de los hechos del Carmel en el ámbito de la atención a las personas, el espacio público, vivienda y los equipamientos, y que se inició desde el mismo momento que se produjo el derrumbe. Se puede decir que el programa de mejoras urbanas acordado para el Carmelo es proporcional al esfuerzo de los ciudadanos del barrio a lo largo de los años.; [CATALÀ] En aquest treball faré una recerca d’un curt però intens període de temps, entre 2005-2012, en què el barri ha viscut de manera accelerada processos de canvi. Els veïns varen lluitar durant moltes dècades per fer realitat el metro del Carmel. Podem dir, per tant, que hi ha hagut un abans i un després de l’esvoranc produït a causa de les obres del metro el mes de gener de 2005. Aquells fets dolorosos, per a veïns i comerciants del barri, que ara ja es poden valorar de manera més desapassionada, han comportat moltes transformacions en la vida quotidiana del barri, però segurament en la mentalitat de les persones i han ofert l’oportunitat de reflexionar la complexitat de les decisions polítiques i tècniques. En aquest context, sembla obligat valorar l’acte de justícia que suposa l’esforç que les administracions públiques van dur a terme, a conseqüència dels fets del Carmel en l’àmbit de l’atenció a les persones, l’espai públic, l’habitatge i els equipaments, i que es va iniciar des del mateix moment que es produí l’ensorrament. Es pot dir que el programa de millores urbanes acordat per al Carmel és proporcional a l'esforç dels ciutadans del barri al llarg del anys. Description: L’objectiu pràctic d’aquesta tesina és analitzar l’impacte social, urbanístic i econòmic de l’obra de la L5 del Metro al barri del Carmel, tractant els següents aspectes: - En una primera etapa es fa l’estudi d’abans de l’arribada del metro per tal de conèixer les aspiracions sobre la futura mobilitat del barri, per una banda de veïns de la zona i per una altra la dels comerciants del Carmel. - En segon lloc s’estudia la fase d’obres sobretot el moment de la crisi ocasionada pel col·lapse del terreny sobre la cua de maniobres, fins l’actualitat.

Title: Projecte de traçat del vial d'enllaç entre la ronda sud d'Igualada i la rotonda entre el carrer del Rec d'Igualada i el carrer de Santa Joaquima Vedruna Authors: Ortínez Martí, Pau Description: Amb la finalització de la construcció del primer tram de la ronda Sud d’Igualada (C-37) entre l’enllaç amb la C-15 i el municipi de Santa Margarida de Montbui es planteja la necessitat d’establir una via de comunicació entre la part sud i centre de la ciutat d’Igualada i les dues vies de comunicació (autovia A2 i Eix Diagonal). Aquesta possibilitat, inclosa dins del planejament del Pla Director Urbanístic de la Conca d’Òdena (aprovat l’any 2008), es pot veure en forma de carretera perpendicular a la ronda Sud d’Igualada i que es prolonga en dues direccions: sud (cap a Santa Margarida de Montbui i Carme) i nord (cap al carrer del Rec d’Igualada per enllaçar amb tota la part sud de la ciutat). Aquest treball es planteja el projecte de traçat de la construcció d’aquest enllaç entre la ronda Sud (C-37) i el carrer del Rec d’Igualada inclòs dins del Pla Director Urbanístic de la Conca d’Òdena.

Esto es así ya que el Plan director de la Bicicleta de Hospitalet prevé la construcción de éste a partir de 2012. La rotonda se espera que proporcione al cruce una mayor fluidez de circulación y un menor riesgo de accidentalidad.

Title: Mejora de los indicadores del sector servicios de Cataluña Authors: Santiago Saborido, Susana Abstract: Este proyecto se centra en el análisis y el desarrollo de los aspectos técnicos para la puesta en marcha de la corrección del efecto calendario en los indicadores económicos del sector servicios de Cataluña que elabora y publica el IDESCAT. El objetivo pues de este proyecto se basa en la producción de estas nuevas series a partir de tres indicadores tradicionales, éstos son: -Índice de Comercio al Por Menor General -Índice de Comercio al Por Menor Sin Estaciones de Servicio -Indice de comercio de grandes superficies . Actualment, l¿Idescat elabora indicadors d¿activitat i de producció del sector serveis, indicadors del comerç al detall i indicadors d¿ocupació en hotels, càmpings i turisme rural, i de rendibilitat hotelera. Title: Valorization of brines in the chlor-alkaly industry using membrane technology Authors: Gasulla Casamajó, Neus Abstract: In this master thesis, the reuse Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWD-RO) brine extracted from the El Prat Desalination plant was studied and valorised, in order to assess the possible usage in the chlor-alkali industry. The brine was chemically characterized using different analytical methods adapted to the high salinities of the samples. Experiments were carried out in order to study nanofiltration for brine purification and electrodialysis for brines concentration. Moreover, as free chlorine was obtained in the ED anode chamber due to the current passing the cell, the production of hypochlorite from this stream using membrane contactors was studied in order to reuse this by-product. Electrodialysis demonstrated to be a feasible technology for SWD-RO brine concentration, as it concentrated the brine and at the same time produced some useful by-products that were further valorised. Nanofiltration efficiently removed polyvalent ions from studied brine. Nevertheless, brine compositions obtained after both treatments were not enough to meet the membrane electrolysis requirements. A secondary treatment will be required to polish the brines to reach the ppb levels required. Hypochlorite produced using a liquid-gas membrane contactor for disinfection purposes of potable water was obtained. However, some modifications should be done to the system in order to improve the overall efficiency of the process. Finally, a mathematical model to predict the concentration performance and design future experiments was developed and validated with the results obtained in the pilot plant.

Title: Benchmarking on web technologies and a recommender system development for E-commerce Authors: De Oliveira Paegle, Anna Carolina Abstract: Internet has opened a window enabling retailers to sell to anyone, anywhere and at any time. E-commerce has completely changed the way of doing business and in this context appeared the “daily deals” or “group buying” web pages: a business model which attracts millions of customers through the online sale of experiences – like a dinner or a trip – or products with a high percentage of discount, possible due to the great number of buyers. Motivated by this context of growth, in this project a benchmarking on web functionalities is done for the main group buying web pages and some general electronic marketplaces. As a result of this benchmarking a web functionality is chosen to be analyzed and developed for an e-commerce deals web: recommender systems. This leads to a second part of this project, where the main techniques to implement a recommendation system are studied and then used to generate a proof of concept for a recommender engine to work in a group buying web environment. The goal of using a recommendation system in this environment is to make the right information arrive to the right costumers. Recommender systems are valuable both for users and businesses. From a consumer perspective, they may help the users to manage the information overload of the e-commerce world. From a corporate point of view, they may contribute to the cross-sell and upsell of products. In this project, an item-based collaborative filtering approach is used to generate the recommender engine for the group buying web environment. After the model is designed, a proof of concept focused in the recommender core is implemented. At the end, some evaluation techniques for the recommender system are described.

Title: uPyxis, a real-time geolocated information network Authors: Carenys Roca, Antoni Abstract: In recent years thanks to the increase of the use of internet by people from around the world, are appearing a lot of social networking services which are changing and evolving the way of communicating and interacting with the world and among people. Apart from the field of friends, these new social networking services are trying to explode new areas as professionals, sharing pictures or messaging. In addition, with the widespread use of smartphones, many of these networks are beginning to include geolocation services, and also are springing some new networks that are based only on geolocation. This project seeks to create a new service currently not offered, based on the use of the capabilities of current smartphones such as geolocation, the instant internet access, and the ability of people to be sensors of their environment. This new service is focused on provided a useful service to curious people who want to know at all times what is happening near them, to people who do not know what activities to do at a given time, and to people that want to announce some events, incidents or activities that they see on some place. To achieve this, it was designed, developed and tested a social network service based on the announce and location of activities and events happening right now around a user and that have a short duration. This service is based on three main basic pillars, information about events or activities, real time, and geolocation. The service will be used from a website and from an Android smartphone, which also will use databases and a webservice that will be on the server. In its realization have been studies and used various technologies like Java, PHP, MySQL, SQLite, Javascript and JQuery.; Català: En els últims anys, gràcies al augment de l’ús d’internet per part de persones de tot el món, estan apareixent varis serveis de xarxes socials, els quals estan canviant la forma de comunicar-se i de interactuar amb el món i entre les persones. A part dels camps d’amistats, aquestes nous serveis estan intentant explotar noves àrees com les professionals, la compartició d’imatges, o els missatges. A més, amb la popularització de l’ús dels smartphones, moltes d’aquestes xarxes comencen a incloure serveis de geolocalització, y també estan naixen noves xarxes basades exclusivament en la geolocalització. Aquest projecte busca crear un nou servei que actualment no s’ofereix, a partir de l’ús de les capacitats dels smartphones actuals com son la geolocalització, la instantaneïtat graciés a l’accés a internet, i a la capacitat de les persones de ser sensors del seu entorn. Aquest nou servei, esta centrat en proveir d’un servei útil per a persones curioses que volen conèixer en tot moment tot el que està passant al seu voltant, per a persones que no saben quines activitats realitzar en un moment donat, y per a persones que volen anunciar esdeveniments, activitats o incidents que veuen en un lloc concret. Per aconseguir això, s’ha dissenyat, desenvolupat y provat un servei de xarxa social basat en l’anunciament y cerca d’activitats y esdeveniments que passen ara mateix al voltant dels usuaris y que tenen una curta durada. Aquest servei esta basat en tres pilars basics, informació d’esdeveniments y activitats, temps real y geolocalització. Aquest servei serà usat des d’una plana web y un Smartphone Android, i farà servir bases de dades y un webservice en el servidor. En la seva realització s’han estudiat i fet servir varies tecnologies com Java, PHP, MySQL, SQLIte, Javascript o JQuery.
