Title: Efficient margin adaptive scheduling for MIMO-OFDMA systems
Authors: Moretti, Marco; Pérez Neira, Ana Isabel
Abstract: In this paper we address the problem of margin adaptive scheduling in the downlink of an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. Optimal resource allocation in MIMO systems requires the joint optimization of: a) linear transmit and receive spatial filters, b) channel assignment and c) power allocation. This problem is not convex and its complexity becomes thus intractable already for small sets of users and subcarriers. To reduce the complexity of the problem at hand, we propose a novel heuristic strategy that partitions the users in different groups according to their average channel quality and addresses the original problem by solving a succession of lower-complexity allocation problems. The spatial dimension is employed to prevent multiple access interference from hindering the performance of the sequential allocation. To further reduce the complexity burden we introduce a linear programming formulation in combination with a waterfilling-based strategy to allocate channels and power to the groups of users. Numerical results and evaluation of the computational complexity show that, though suboptimal, in most cases the proposed algorithm manages to exploit in an original way the inherent multi-user diversity of multi-carrier systems to ease the task of resource allocation with a very limited performance loss from the theoretic optimum.

Title: MEET: Motif Elements Estimation Toolki

Title: Modelling shoreline sand waves: application to the coast of Namibia
Authors: Falqués Serra, Albert; Van den Berg, Niels; Ribas Prats, Francesca; Caballeria Suriñach, Miquel
Abstract: The SW coast of Africa (Namibia and part of Angola) features very long sandy beaches and a wave climate dominated by energetic swells from the SSW, therefore approaching the coast with a very high obliquity. Satellite images reveal that along that coast there are many shoreline sand waves with wavelengths ranging from 2 to 8 km. A more detailed study, including a Fourier analysis of the shoreline position, confirms a high spectral density concentration at these lengths scales. Also, it becomes apparent that at least some of the sand waves are dynamically active rather than being controlled by the geological setting. A morphodynamic model is used to test the hypothesis that these sand waves could emerge as free morphodynamic instabilities of the coastline due to the obliquity in wave incidence. It is found that the wave period, Tp, is crucial to establish the tendency to stability or instability, instability increasing for decreasing period, whilst there is some discrepancy in the observed periods. Model results for Tp = 7 s clearly show the tendency for the coast to develop free sand waves at 2 km wavelength within a few years, which migrate to the north at rates of 0.6-0.7 km/yr. For Tp = 8 s, instability is weaker and rather sensitive to other factors as the underlying bathymetry. In this case, the coast seems to be nearly at neutral stability so that sand waves originated from other mechanisms can propagate downdrift with little decay.

Title: LMS openness perception in educational and technological areas
Authors: Conde García, Miguel Ángel; García Peñalvo, Francisco Javier; Rodríguez Conde, María José; Alier Forment, Marc
Abstract: The application of the Information and Communications Technology implies changes in the means that support learning. This leads to the emergence of lot of tools that aim to improve students’ learning. One of the most relevant tools are learning management systems. However these tools are on the one hand, mostly focused on the institution and the course and not too much on the learner, and on the other they are very monolithic and closed environments. It is necessary to facilitate the evolution and openness of these platforms in a way they can fulfil
students’ needs, and to do this a service-based framework is proposed. It has been validated through experiences in
educational and technological areas and they were compared with each other. This allow to check that opening learning platforms is possible and not only in technological context but in other areas.

Title: Integration of M-learning and LMS: a sustainability approach
Authors: Casany Guerrero, María José; Alier Forment, Marc; Barceló García, Miquel
Abstract: Mobile phones are widely used in both rich and poor countries, unlike what happens with other ICTs. The expansion of mobile telephony in poor countries presents an opportunity to fight against digital divide. In the latter countries, mobile phones are used to get information and services about agriculture, health, and education among other areas. Specifically in the area of education there are many who think that mobile phones are a useful tool to help achieve universal primary education, one of
the Millennium Development Goals proposed by the United Nations. There are many educational experiences with mobile phones for development. But most of these experiences have serious limitations that affect their long-term sustainability. In
this line, the current paper provides a set of guidelines to define more sustainable and long-term viable mobile-learning projects and presents its applications to a m-learning project: the Moodbile project.

Title: On periodic solutions of 2-periodic Lyness' equations
Authors: Bastien, Guy; Mañosa Fernández, Víctor; Rogalski, Marc
Abstract: We study the existence of periodic solutions of the nonautonomous periodic Lyness' recurrenceun+2 = (an + un+1)/un, where {an}n is a cycle with positive values a, b and with positive initial conditions. It is known that for a = b = 1 all the sequences generated by this recurrence are 5-periodic. We prove that for each pair (a, b) ? (1, 1) there are infinitely many initial conditions giving rise to periodic sequences, and that the family of recurrences have almost all the even periods. If a ? b, then any odd period, except 1, appears.

Title: Temporal stability in the perception of dry eye ocular disconfort symptoms
Authors: Cardona Torradeflot, Genís; Marcellán, Concepción; Fornieles Deu, Albert; Vilaseca Ricart, Meritxell; Quevedo Junyent, Luisa Jesus
Abstract: Purpose. A prospective longitudinal study was designed to investigate the ability of patients with tear deficiency to correctly recall their past symptoms. The ultimate goal of the study was to contribute to the ongoing research concerning the lack of association between dry eye symptomatology and clinical tests of tear film evaluation.
Methods. A total of 26 subjects with ages ranging from 29 to 61 years participated in the study. All subjects reported symptoms associated with tear deficiency, although none had been diagnosed with dry eye disease. Subjects were instructed to grade their symptoms on two different occasions, at the precise moment they were experiencing them, by means of a home questionnaire, and through a recall questionnaire, which was administered within a maximum interval of 10 days from the first questionnaire. Tear evaluation tests were performed at this second time. Non-parametric statistical analyses were used to investigate the relationship between present and recalled symptoms and between symptoms and signs, as well as between the different dry eye tests. The contributions of age, gender, and recall period were also evaluated.
Results. With the exception of irritation (p 0.029) and scratchiness (p 0.025), no statistically significant difference was encountered between home and recall questionnaires, although females were found to recall their symptoms slightly better than males (p 0.048). An increase in the severity of the symptoms was associated with a better recollection (p 0.007). Symptoms (home or recalled) and clinical signs were not correlated, although the recalled symptom of scratchiness presented moderately strong correlations with several dry eye tests.
Conclusions. Although the lack of correlation between dry eye tests and symptoms mirrored previous research, symptoms
recall was found to follow certain interesting patterns, similar to those published in pain research literature.

Title: The Effect of proficiency on CLIL benefits in engineering students in Spain
Authors: Aguilar Pérez, Marta; Muñoz, Carmen
Abstract: This paper reports on a follow-up study of a Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) pilot experience with bilingual postgraduate engineering students at a Spanish university. It aimed at examining learners' gains in listening and grammar skills after a CLIL course in English for a semester, in particular whether students' listening and grammar skills were affected similarly and whether participants' proficiency level played a role. Paired-sampled t-tests showed the difference between the mean scores in the pre-and post-listening test was significant but it was not for the pre-and post grammar tests. When students were distributed into three groups on the basis of their pre-test scores, a repeated measures ANOVA showed that less proficient students obtained higher gains in listening and grammar skills than more proficient students.
