An environmental impact causal model for improving the environmental performance of construction processes

RSS E-prints UPC - Dv, 14/06/2013 - 15:57
Title: An environmental impact causal model for improving the environmental performance of construction processes Authors: Fuertes Casals, Alba; Casals Casanova, Miquel; Gangolells Solanellas, Marta; Forcada Matheu, Núria; Macarulla Martí, Marcel; Roca Ramon, Xavier Abstract: Despite the increasing efforts made by the construction sector to reduce the environmental impact of their processes, construction sites are still a major source of pollution and adverse impacts on the environment. This paper aims to improve the understanding of construction-related environmental impacts by identifying on-site causal factors and associated immediate circumstances during construc- tion processes for residential building projects. Based on the literature and focus group fi ndings, we have developed a construction-related Environmental Impact Causal Model consisting of a process-oriented causal network of thirty-nine environmental impacts, forty- fi ve causal factors and over two hundred causal relationships. It is intended to contribute to a reduction in construction-related environmental impacts on building sites by supporting contractors and other decision-makers in the early identi fi cation of factors that are likely to lead to impacts or to exacerbate their consequences, as well as the later environmental performance evaluation and control. The causal model is validated by investigating over a hundred environmental incidents. Finally, possible methods to improve construction-related environ- mental performance are suggested.

Relationship between binder and mixture damage resistance at intermediate and low temperatures

RSS E-prints UPC - Dv, 14/06/2013 - 15:52
Title: Relationship between binder and mixture damage resistance at intermediate and low temperatures Authors: Clopotel, Cristian S.; Velasquez, Raul; Bahia, Hussain U.; Pérez Jiménez, Félix Edmundo; Miró Recasens, José Rodrigo; Botella Nieto, Ramón Abstract: The importance of binder performance on the mixture response to accelerated fatigue loading and thermal cracking was investigated. Binder’s fatigue performance was measured by means of the Linear Amplitude Sweep test (LAS) while fatigue properties of the mixtures were investigated by performing the EBADE test. The low temperature properties of the binders were investigated by measuring the glass transition temperature and fracture properties with the Single Edge Notched Beam (SENB) test. The mixtures fracture properties were investigated using the FENIX test. The experimental matrix for this study included unmodified and rubber-modified binders and limestone aggregates. A good correlation between binder and mixture fracture energy was observed at low temperatures. This good correlation indicates the importance of fracture response of the binder to the overall low temperature cracking performance of the mixture. Experimental results suggest that a significant part of the variation of the fracture energy of the mixture can be explained by the binder fracture properties. Good correlations were also obtained for the displacement at maximum load in the SENB and Fenix tests. Similar accelerated fatigue response for binders and mixtures were observed when the stresses and strains were normalized. Significant reduction in the stress happened at about the same normalized strain in the binder and mixture. It can be seen that the mixture has remaining strength after reaching peak stress probably due to the aggregate structure.

Experimental validation of hydrogen sulphide removal from biogas using biotrickling process at pilot plant level

RSS Treballs acadèmics UPC - Dv, 14/06/2013 - 02:00
Title: Experimental validation of hydrogen sulphide removal from biogas using biotrickling process at pilot plant level Authors: Mesa Garcia, Cristian Abstract: Within the framework of sustainable development, and ever-increasing energy costs, wastewater treatment operators focus on developing on-site energy production: the main approach today is via sewage biogas. In most cases, H2S removal is necessary to meet the requirements of the energy conversion equipment inlet requirements (for cogeneration motors around 300 – 500 ppm, but for fuel cells around 1ppm or below). Therefore to optimise the overall energy and economic balance, it is necessary to dispose of efficient and cost-effective biogas treatments, amongst which biological treatments have promising prospects for H2S removal. A biogas-powered SOFC pilot plant was constructed in a Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) (January 2009) in Spain and was operated until the end of the project (June 2012). The pilot plant treats 10 Nm3/h biogas and produces both electricity and heat in a high efficient way. The BIOCELL project (funded by the LIFE+ program of the European Commission, LIFE07 ENV/E/000847) is one of the few demonstration projects that studies biogas applications in SOFC. The following project tried to review the state of the art of removal H2S biological technologies and summarized the experience gathered from the biotrickling filter of the BIOCELL project. The biogas treatment was designed to reach the inlet requirements of the fuel cell. H2S was identified as the main biogas pollutant and it causes severe and rapid degradation of fuel cell stacks. Examples of industrial biogas treatment units coupled to fuel cells consisting of a main H2S removal stage followed by a final H2S polishing system proved to be successful, thus this was the strategy implemented in the BIOCELL project. In particular, a biotrickling filter was installed as it is one of the most interesting technologies for the main removal because of its low operating costs compared to other physical – chemical treatments. On the other hand, adsorption-based systems (iron oxides + biogas drying + activated carbon) were chosen for biogas polishing as they are the only technology which can reduce the concentration of contaminants to the stringent extent of fuel cell’s specifications. The biotrickling filter was operated for more than 12 months. The operating conditions were optimized to temperature 30ºC, pH 1.5 and residence time > 100 seconds. Over the long term and under these conditions, it showed a removal efficiency of 70% and an availability of 80% because of progressive filter clogging due to elemental sulphur accumulation. Operational expenses were calculated at 0,5 – 1 c€/Nm3. This report includes operational guidelines and recommendations for re-design. To sum-up, this report shows the conclusions of the biogas treatment technologies from BIOCELL project, which shows that are ready to meet fuel cell inlet requirements for long periods of time at a reduced cleaning cost.

Ammoniun removal from wastewater by liquid-liquid membrane contactors

RSS Treballs acadèmics UPC - Dv, 14/06/2013 - 02:00
Title: Ammoniun removal from wastewater by liquid-liquid membrane contactors Authors: Alcaraz Segura, Aurora Abstract: Removal of ammonia from wastewater generated in a waste treatment plant by a membrane contactor was studied at lab scale. The treated wastewater will be applied in the Hydrogen and Oxygen production by electrolysis via renewable energies. The aim of this study relies on fulfill the process requirements in the electrolysis, since the water used in the electrolysis process must be almost pure water due to efficiency process of Hydrogen and Oxygen production decreases with the ions in the dissolution. The residual ammonium concentration of the aqueous stream feeding the membrane distillation step ranging between 1 to 5 ppm is not removed and arrives to the electrolysis step generating an increase in the conductivity. So the use of a liquid-liquid membrane contactor is proposed to reduce ammonium (NH+4) concentration before membranes distillation step. The experimental set-up was performed by a contactor (Liqui-cel X30 HF (Celgard, USA)) which works in close and open loop mode configuration. In close circuit, it was used a tank of 10 liters to storage ammonium solution and in open circuit it was used 25 liters as initial ammonium volume. A pump (Cole Parmer instrument) was used to feed the contactor from the tank. An aqueous ammonium solution with a low concentration is in the inner side of the membrane contactor (Lumen) and sulphuric acid solution goes in the outside of the membrane contactor (Shell). The pH plays a very important role in the chemical equilibrium; for that reason is motorized during the experiments. On the other hand, it has been carried out the simulation of a mathematical model used by various authors to validate the experimental results by COMSOL Multiphysics program
